Final Report of the Accelerated Reader Committee
March 4, 2014
On April 24, 2013, the membership of the PLC at MDCPS PTA voted to make a gift of $4,500 to the Primary Learning Center to assist in the establishment of an Accelerated Reader Grade Leveled Library Program. The monetary gift was to be used for the purchase of books and other appropriate resources. Simultaneous with this gift, the membership established the Accelerated Reader Committee to oversee the purchase of the books and other appropriate resources.
During 2013-14 Academic Year, the Primary Learning Center advised the PLC PTA that it had received access to Miami-Dade County Public School’s free digital library and consequently access to hundreds of online accelerated reader books. The school therefore felt that its needs had changed with regard to physical books for the classroom and that it would better benefit from additional digital tablet/digital reading devices in the classrooms. The PLC administration requested that instead of purchasing all physical books with the funds that some of the funds be used to purchase digital devices.
In addition, the Primary Learning Center had requested that the PLC PTA assist in the purchase of a Reflex Math license, an online math resource for the students.
The PLC PTA had adopted “PLC Goes Digital” as its theme for the year, so the request for digital devices and the Reflex Math license seemed appropriate and in line with its own stated goals. The PLC PTA Executive Committee announced at the October 23, 2013 meeting that it intended to re-allocate the funds originally set aside for physical books for digital devices and Reflex Math. At the January 29, 2014, the Executive Committee informed the membership that the digital devices and Reflex Math license had been purchased. The membership ratified purchase of the digital devices and Reflex Math, which were wholly or partially purchased with the funds originally allocated for purchase of physical books pursuant to the April 24, 2013 motion.
Approximately eight (8) digital devices were purchased with the AR Grade Leveled Library Program funds for the sum of $1,525 and Reflex Math license was purchased for $2,400. Five hundred and seventy-five ($575) dollars remains available for the purchase of physical books and other appropriate resources.
This Committee recognizes the changing needs of the Primary Learning Center as well as its continuing desire to harness technology both for its innovations and efficiencies. The Committee also recognizes the PTA’s commitment to being responsive to the Primary Learning Center and to work cooperatively whenever possible. Consequently, this Committee ratifies the January 29, 2014 decision of the Executive Committee and the PTA membership and approved the following motions:
MOTION: To ratify the Executive Committee’s re-allocation of $4,500 allocated to the Accelerated Reader Grade Leveled Library Program for the purchase of books and other appropriate resources to: the AR Digital Library Reading Devices Program for the purchase of Samsung digital devices; for the purchase of the Reflex Math license; and for the allocation to physical AR books, other books or other resources identified by the Primary Learning Center. This motion was moved, seconded and approved unanimously.
MOTION: To ratify the action of the PLC at MDCPS PTA membership at its January 29, 2014 meeting when it ratified the actions of the Executive Committee which purchased Samsumg digital devices and Reflex Math, utilizing, amongst other funds, the funds which had been allocated to the Accelerated Reader Grade Leveled Library Program. This motion was moved, seconded and approved unanimously.
The Committee recommends also that the PLC PTA amend its 2013-14 Budget to reflect the re-allocation of the $4,500 from “Obligation: AR Funds yet to be paid” to:
AR Digital Library Reading Devices $(8,325) ($6,800 +$1,525)
Reflex Math License $ (2,400)
AR Books, Other Books or Resources Identified by PLC $ (1,000) ($425+$575)
In light of the success of the Book Fair and the clear love of physical books by the students and families of the Primary Learning Center combined with the recognition of the continued growth of the Primary Learning Center (two Advanced Academic Placement classes added in January 2014 and the addition of at least three more classes in the fall 2014), the Committee recommends that the PLC PTA continue to support the Primary Learning Center’s Accelerated Reader Program.
Give that the Accelerated Reader Committee’s charge was to oversee the purchase of books and other appropriate resources for the Accelerated Reader Grade Leveled Library Program and given that those funds have now been expended or re-allocated, the Accelerated Reader Committee submits this its Final Report and stands as SUNSET from this day forward.
Respectfully Submitted on this 4th Day of March 2014.
